Salvadoran abroad get your DUI from wherever you are

Written by Evelyn Alas

If you are a salvadoran residing in the United States or other countries and need to carry out procedures, services or exercise your rights through the Documento Único de Identidad (DUI), the authorities have joined efforts to bring the Service Centers for registration, issuance and delivery of the document to where you are.

There are 23 consulates established in different countries, including 18 in the United States, 1 in Canada, 1 in Mexico, 1 in Italy and 2 in Spain. Currently, there are 8 DUI printing and immediate delivery centers in consulates in the cities of Los Angeles, Silver Spring, Long Island, Elizabeth, Woodbridge, Dallas, Houston and Seville.

The consulates also offer Saturday days, mobile consulates and identity fairs to bring services closer to salvadorans abroad in cities where there are no permanent services.

On august 6, 2021, during the celebration of the Day of the Salvadoran in the United States, the first DUI Printing and Immediate Delivery Center was inaugurated at the Consulate General of El Salvador in Los Angeles, California.

In cases where the DUI cannot be delivered immediately at the Service Centers located in the United States, the diaspora has the option of DUI Express. This is a service enabled to send your document through postal mail to your door at a cost of $20.00. All you have to do is go to the website www.duiexpress.com or download the DUI Express APP.

The DUI is recognized as an identification document in several U.S. states, such as Texas, Colorado, California, Georgia, Washington, Virginia, Illinois and Minnesota. In addition, in Virginia, the DUI is accepted to apply for a driver's license. BB&t Suntrust Bank also accepts DUI for financial transactions at its more than 2,000 branches in several states and Washington, D.C.

In addition, it provides many benefits to salvadorans living abroad: such as exercising the right to vote, legal identification, study in universities in El Salvador, affiliation to the Salvadoreño Seguro program (ISSS), opening accounts in financial institutions in El Salvador, extension of powers of attorney and permits, signing contracts, conducting immigration procedures and driving licenses.

The requirements to process the DUI abroad may vary according to the type of procedure (first time, modification, replacement or renewal) and include the payment of $35.00 dollars or the equivalent in local currency, birth certificate, identification document with photograph, proof of academic degree, among others.
