New Year's Eve 2022 Plan achieves 7.42% reduction in traffic accidents in december

The road safety deployment implemented by the Central Government to protect salvadorans who travel through different roads in the country is developing successfully, reducing 7.42% of traffic accidents so far in december, despite the increase in the number of vehicles during the end of the year.

"In the month of december, 1,410 road accidents are reported, 7.42% less compared to last year", detailed the Vice minister of Transportation, Nelson Reyes, which means more than a hundred fewer mishaps. In this month there has also been a reduction of 8.42 % in the number of accidents caused by drunk drivers, compared to 2021.

The above figure highlights the success of the plan in which transit managers and inspectors from the Viceministerio de Transporte (VMT) participate, working in coordination with the Land Transit Division of the Policía Nacional Civil (PNC).

The New Year's Eve 2022 Plan runs from november 17 to january 2, 2023, developing more than 1,000 vehicle controls and 400 anti-doping controls. In addition to the managers, 775 transport inspectors, more than 100 anti-doping agents and more than 1,000 transit police officers are participating.

From december 1 to december 27, more than 27,000 notices have been issued for violations to the General Traffic and Road Safety Regulations, and 111 people have been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Throughout the year, from january 1 to december 27, 256,911 notices were issued, most of them to private vehicles and close to 30,000 to public transportation.

In order to contribute to the safety of salvadorans visiting family, friends or tourist destinations during these holidays, the Central Government offers the free road assistance service "MOP Te Asiste", which is requested by calling 2510-0199, in case a person faces problems when traveling by car, anywhere in the country, due to mechanical failures, change of tires or lack of fuel.

"To date, 1,155 road assistances have been carried out, which translates into more than 57,896 kilometers traveled (to provide assistance)", said Vice Minister Reyes. In some cases, up to 200 kilometers have been traveled to help drivers with free towing services, 79% of the assistance has been provided in the central and paracentral zone.
