Written by Alondra Gutiérrez

The Federación de Cámaras y Asociaciones Industriales de Centroamérica y República Dominicana (FECAICA) organized a virtual discussion entitled “Salud de los consumidores: desafíos de la industria Centroamericana y de República Dominicana”. The event was attended by representatives of the regional industry and the scientific community.

Among the main topics addressed at the discussion table were the following:

  • The value of business transformation and its contribution through investment in research, scientific development, innovation and technology for the benefit of society and consumers; and the different contributions of the industrial sector in the reduction of damage to health from their business lines and its importance in making them known to consumers.

During the virtual conversation, the president of FECAICA, Robert Vinello, emphasized that consumer protection has to go through the range of people, concepts and processes, in addition, he expressed the importance of consumer rights and the contributions that the industry is making for the benefit of consumers.

Among the main challenges in the industry, harm reduction is a concept that has been used over the years, however, it is little known. It is based on the incorporation of strategies aimed at reducing the risks or effects associated with the use of various products to improve people's quality of life.

"Expanding the definition of consumer health in the market by offering products that come to guarantee the health that we are entitled to from the legal point of view, the information for consumers must be accurate, clear, timely and sufficient where I as a consumer, have access to it and from there I can say that I can consume and what not", said Erick Ulate, president of Asociación de Consumidores de Costa Rica.

Among other opinions expressed during the discussion, the importance of including the concept of harm reduction in public health policies was highlighted, for which he, former Minister of Public Health of Guatemala, reacted.

"The importance of homogenizing the different rules of the game makes it possible to create a system of regulation, surveillance and control of these products to ensure that consumers will have good products at their disposal; and at the regional level, to work together to achieve this homogenization of the visions of public health and the business sector, as well as the academia to avoid technical obstacles to trade that harm the States in an integral way", said Marco Tulio Sosa, former minister of Public Health of Guatemala.

Finally, Paola Quezada, executive director for FECAICA, concluded that this conference has been a very important space that has left us significant lessons on the concept of harm reduction, which is not new, but the importance of its intervention in the different spheres of people's lives generates a responsibility to continue making it known.

The dialogue and the scientific and technical participation of the business sector, consumers, academia and governments will make it possible to build better conditions for trade facilitation, finding a balance between commercial and health objectives, for the benefit of consumers and society.
