El Salvador joins to international convention on civil and commercial law, in The Hague

Written by Karla Gutiérrez

On behalf of our country, the Vice Chancellor of the Republic, Adriana Mira, presented today the accession of El Salvador to the Convention on the Service Abroad of Judicial and Extrajudicial Documents in Civil or Commercial Matters, during a ceremony held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, in its capacity as depositary State of such instrument.

This action will contribute to our nation's efforts to facilitate the use of technological tools in the generation of timely and effective notices in the fields, which will come to strengthen compliance with the law.

"This Convention, which dates back to 1965, will allow the Supreme Court of Justice of El Salvador, as the designated national authority, to cooperate with the authorities of the other 82 contracting parties, in order to make the service of judicial and extrajudicial documents as efficient as possible", said Vice Chancellor Mira.

She added that this mechanism will facilitate and allow the corresponding authorities and institutions to benefit from current technological capabilities. "The use of new tools is at the forefront of El Salvador's policies, as the government has implemented measures for the transition to the digital era, allowing Salvadorans to benefit from these opportunities", said the diplomat.

She also highlighted the role of the Hague Conference on Private International Law (HCCH), an initiative in charge of seeking the standardization of such regulations worldwide, including the Convention to which we are now a party.

"It is essential that States find more efficient and effective ways to cooperate with each other, and international organizations such as the HCCH play an important role in this. Their work in drafting new legal instruments also enables our authorities, and most importantly our people, to benefit from innovative and standardized legal practices", said Vice Chancellor Mira.

She said that El Salvador "is currently in an upward transition, as people can now live in peace and security for the first time in decades. The new security conditions provide conditions for new forms of cooperation and development", referring to the opportunities for collaboration and joint work that open with this accession, as well as participation in the initiatives of interest promoted by the HCCH, such as the digital assets and tokens project, the Expert Group on Digital Currencies of Central Banks.
