ASIET and Microsoft sign collaboration agreement to strengthen cybersecurity in Latin America

Written by Evelyn Alas

While digital crimes are not a novelty, there are still challenges in the field of protecting illegal access to data and equipment of others for commercial or illicit business purposes.

Cybersecurity is an essential discipline to protect users in the digital environment. According to Microsoft data, 90% of cybersecurity intrusions begin by clicking on an attached message that is a hoax.

The secure use of information technologies is essential for the development of activities related to employment, education, information, public participation, entertainment or social relations. The main objectives of this alliance are to promote safe surfing on the Internet, protect our users and citizens through joint collaboration between the different participants in the ecosystem, and promote good practices among companies and users, and the use of new technologies and solutions to face cybersecurity challenges.

For Maryleana Méndez, Secretary General of ASIET, "this agreement represents a positive step in the path to raise awareness about these crimes and protect the integrity of citizens and companies in the digital world. Cybersecurity is becoming increasingly relevant, especially from the acceleration of digital transformation, the increase in the use of digital solutions and applications, but also of related cybercrimes".

From ASIET we work especially on raising awareness of the risks to online security linked to access to illegal online audiovisual content.

"From Microsoft we have the firm conviction that only if we work in coordination with the different actors in the digital world, we will be able to face these challenges that every day become more frequent and sophisticated. Microsoft analyzes 24 trillion signals daily, which has allowed us to block around 9 trillion endpoint threats, 31 trillion identity threats and 32 trillion malicious emails in the last year.

In addition, we seek to disrupt criminal networks that affect Internet users. With this alliance we will be able to act in a fast and coordinated way to protect our users from possible threats and collaborate in the remediation in an efficient and coordinated manner", said Victoria Beckman, director of Microsoft's Digital Crimes Unit.

As a first joint initiative, the Microsoft DCU team will participate in the Latin American Digital Transformation Congress 2021, convened by ASIET, the Banco de Desarrollo de América Latina (CAF), Instituto Federal de Telecomunicaciones de México (IFT), and the support of the Unión Internacional de Telecomunicaciones (UIT), on october 28; their session will address 'Malware Disruption Operations and the need to create a common front to face Cybercrime', recommending good practices in inter-agency collaboration to achieve a safer digital world.
