Samsung announces SmartThings Energy collaboration with Tesla at CES 2024

Written by Karla Gutiérrez

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has announced that it has established a service integration with Tesla, being showcased at CES® 2024, which will connect SmartThings Energy to Tesla products such as the Powerwall home battery, solar inverter, Wall Connector charging solutions and electric vehicles (VE).

This collaboration, made possible by Tesla's open APIs, will lead to further expansion of SmartThings Energy's already comprehensive level of connectivity and contribute to Samsung's ultimate goal of providing consumers with more convenient and seamless home experiences.

"Tesla Energy customers can now manage and monitor the energy status of their homes through SmartThings Energy and Samsung devices, in addition to the Tesla app, ensuring greater access and connectivity", said Chanwoo Park, EVP and Head of IoT Development Team, Device Platform Center, Samsung Electronics. "This new collaboration is a key achievement for Samsung Electronics in making our solution more widely available beyond home appliances".

The primary consumer benefit of Samsung's collaboration with Tesla allows SmartThings Energy to connect to Tesla Powerwall, solar inverters, charging wall connectors and electric vehicles, enabling SmartThings Energy to display information regarding users' energy production, storage and usage.

In addition, consumers will be able to better prepare for power outages and interruptions thanks to SmartThings Energy's ability to synchronize with the "Storm Watch" feature of Tesla's Powerwall app. This means that in the event of extreme weather events, such as typhoons or heavy snowfall, users will be able to receive alerts through SmartThings on their connected Samsung TVs and cell phones, in addition to the Tesla app. They can also activate AI Energy mode before and during power outages to extend the remaining backup power stored in Tesla Powerwall.

Samsung's use of the Tesla API fits into its ongoing effort to make substantial progress on the Net Zero Home project and enhance the multi-device experience for SmartThings users.

"We at Tesla are excited to add capability to our products to interact with other smart devices and software in customers' homes. We recently released FleetAPI, which allows developers to interact with Powerwall, Solar and Wall Connector, in addition to our vehicles. We are pleased to learn that Samsung has chosen to be one of the first developers, given its leadership position in consumer smart home technology. Customers will be able to see the status of their grid connectivity across multiple devices and intelligently control home loads to extend their Powerwall power when they are off the grid", said Drew Baglino of Tesla.

SmartThings Energy connected to Tesla Powerwall will be shown for the first time at the Samsung booth at CES 2024. The actual service is currently in development and is scheduled to launch in the second quarter of 2024. Please note that the features described above are subject to change.
