40.7% of respondents went into debt to meet monthly expenses

According to the march 2023 Conjunctural Survey of Fundación Guillermo Manuel Ungo (FUNDAUNGO), explains that, despite the adjustment in the household budget, 40.7% of the population had to get into debt to meet their monthly expenses; 32.2% got into debt with other people; 6.2% with financial institutions (Banks or Savings Banks); and 2.3% with other people and with financial institutions.

In addition, of the 17% of the population interviewed who explained that they have a credit card, 24.6% added that they stopped paying it last month due to economic difficulties, twice as many as in november 2022 (13.1%).

Among the economic problems that concern the population are inflation, unemployment, poverty, low economic growth and inequality. This concern is more than double that in 2020, according to FUNDAUNGO data.

In tune with the assessment that the economy is the main problem of the country, the majority of the population perceives that the cost of living has increased in 2023. For 86.7% the cost of living has increased a lot or somewhat in the last three months.

This increase in prices has significantly reduced the purchasing power of households and has forced them to cut the budget they devote to the purchase of these, in some cases more severely than others.

For the salvadorans surveyed on economic matters, the sustained rise in the prices of goods and services; an inflation that as of february 2023 was 6.8%, however, the inflation of food and non-alcoholic beverages was 12.6%, being the highest inflation rates experienced since the dollarization of the economy.
