The Banco Central de Reserva (BCR), released data from the Oficina Nacional de Estadísticas y Censos (ONEC), in its latest bulletin of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the month of december 2023.

According to the bulletin, for the month of december 2023, the General Consumer Price Index in december 2023 was 129.34, presenting a monthly decrease of 0.76%, such variation being 0.90 percentage points lower with respect to the result of november 2023, which had an increase of 0.14%.

These data are supported by decreases in Transportation, Furniture and household goods and ordinary household maintenance, recreation and culture; while alcoholic beverages and tobacco, communications, and restaurant and hotels, registered the main monthly increases.

Among the main price reductions were the following goods and services: air travel showed a 0.58% drop in costs, as did special gasoline, which fell 0.08%, regular gasoline 0.05%, diesel 0.04% and beans 0.03%.

The largest increases were seen in restaurant and hotel services, which presented a fairly significant increase of 5.82%, as did alcoholic beverages and tobacco which rose 4.36% and health services with 2.98%.

For the twelfth month of 2023, a monthly variation of lesser magnitude was observed with respect to that of december 2022, where growth was 0.11%, explained by increases in Food and non-alcoholic beverages; restaurant and hotels; accommodation, water, electricity, gas and other fuels; and contraction in transportation.

As for accumulated inflation, the CPI as of december 2023 was 1.23%, which is 6.10 percentage points lower than that observed in the same month of the previous year, when it was 7.32%. This behavior is explained by a lower rate of variation in prices, which contributed to maintaining a lower inflation level than that recorded as of december 2022.
