The Centro para la Defensa del Consumidor (CDC), presents today its cost-of-living analysis and proposals to alleviate the economic situation of salvadoran families.

The basic urban food basket has increased by US$55.55 and the rural US$41.33, from january 2021 to march 2024, which represents an accumulated inflation of 22% and 23%, according to the Centro para la Defensa del Consumidor.

In addition, they reported that there has been an increase in public service charges and municipal taxes, which put even more pressure on the vulnerability of the middle class and the poor, such as the US$23 increase in the cost of electricity.

Minimum wages have not risen since 2021. Meanwhile, the cost of living has increased by US$920. This situation is quite complicated, according to the CDC, because with the current minimum wages, workers need US$8.99 to buy the basic urban food basket and pay for public and municipal services.

While workers in the agricultural sector need US$47.29 to buy the rural basic food basket and pay for public and municipal services.
