Huawei's Bob Cai: digital fiber, illuminating LATAM Digital

Written by Evelyn Alas

During the LATAM ICT 2022 Congress, Bob Cai, president of the Operator Business Unit of Huawei Latin America, gave a keynote lecture entitled "Digital Fiber, illuminating LATAM Digital", defining and elaborating on the connotation of Digital Fiber. He called for bringing Digital Fiber to every home, every enterprise and every cloud to build a better connected LATAM.

Huawei's Bob Cai: Digital Fiber, illuminating Digital LATAM

Digitalization is advancing rapidly. LATAM's digital transformation index has increased by 50% from 2020 to 2021. COVID-19 also redefines the value of connectivity.

Networks mean more for social and economic development, and are fundamental to ensure the continuity of work, production and education, facilitating the recovery of society.

Fiber and IP addresses are two fundamental pillars for network construction. According to Omdia's predictions, the fiber coverage rate in LATAM will exceed 60% by 2026. Fiber everywhere will soon become a reality.

At the same time, in the new "Connected Everything" era, various connected devices, such as wearable devices and industrial robots, generate hundreds of billions of connections, requiring massive IP addresses. IP in Everything is materializing.

Huawei is working with industry partners to define Digital Fiber, further unlocking the value of network connections and facilitating digital upgrades in LATAM.

Technically, Digital Fiber has three advantages:

l Smart: Digital Fiber uses more than 20 algorithms to reduce construction costs, improving planning efficiency by 10 times.

Plug and play: Digital Fiber uses QuickConnect, an industry-leading technology to reduce construction difficulty, improving deployment efficiency by 70%.

l Visible and traceable: Digital Fiber uses intelligent image recognition and innovative fiber iris technologies, making traditional dumb resources visible and traceable and achieving digital operations and maintenance.

Commercially, Digital Fiber has 3 key application scenarios:

lDigital Fiber to the home: Digital Fiber provides premium home connections to make people's digital lives richer. First, fast fiber coverage is achieved through Fiber to the Home (FTTH), which helps thousands of residences get connected. Then, through Fiber to the Room (FTTR), fiber networks are further extended to every room, achieving fiber everywhere and enabling users to enjoy the best experience.

lDigital fiber to the enterprise: Digital fiber provides differentiated private lines for businesses, in response to the diversified requirements of SMBs, such as basic office, and premium connection requirements, Digital.

Fiber provides a comprehensive service to further accelerate the digital transformation of SMEs. In addition, it provides premium OTN private lines for large enterprises to meet requirements such as high bandwidth and low latency, achieving a guaranteed SLA.

lDigital fiber to the cloud: Digital fiber can work with cloud services to achieve multi-cloud interconnection with Cloud Express. It can improve enterprise service efficiency and provide enterprises with a premium cloud experience.

In addition, broadband networks have been transformed from traditional copper pair networks to fiber networks, saving energy consumption by 83%. The transport network is upgraded from an electrical network to an optical network with innovative OXC technology, reducing energy consumption by 60%.

Each OXC hub node can reduce 140 tons of carbon emissions each year, which is equivalent to planting about 6,000 trees.

"We will continue to work with industry partners to bring Digital Fiber to every home, every business, and every cloud to build a better connected LATAM", concluded Bob Cai in his keynote, "We believe Digital Fiber will help LATAM better connect with the world, and drive LATAM's digital economy".
