Our resource guards protect reforested areas near the 3 de Febrero Hydroelectric Power Plant during the dry season

Written by Evelyn Alas

The Comisión Ejecutiva Hidroeléctrica del Río Lempa (CEL), has a team of 44 Resource Guards to protect seven areas, among which 221 reforested plots have been divided in sectors of the perimeter of the reservoir of the 3 de Febrero Hydroelectric Power Plant, in compliance with the environmental measure of reforestation, with an assisted natural regeneration approach, established as compensation during the construction and operation stages of our fifth hydroelectric power plant.

During the dry season from november to april-may, the Resource Guards are in charge of developing and maintaining firebreaks to prevent forest fires, and before the beginning of winter from april to may, they plant rebound sprouts of species such as jiote, tempate, jocote and pitarrillo to reinforce the fences of the reforested areas, which in turn serve as living barriers.

"These activities are timely at this time of the year when the occurrence of forest fires increases due to high temperatures, as well as human irresponsibility. Our Resource Guards have in their hands the responsibility of protecting 93.6 hectares established in the construction phase and approximately 15 hectares of 54 hectares in the operation pase”, explained Carlos Josué Rivera, CEL's Natural Resources Analyst.

Currently, the Resource Guard team is also in charge of collecting and classifying the seeds of trees such as: black conacaste, white conacaste, nance, maquillishuat, balsam, fire tree, among other native species, for direct planting in the reforested plots, as part of the assisted natural regeneration actions, which seek to improve the biological corridor that becomes habitat for wildlife such as cusucos, squirrels, different species of birds, snakes and white-tailed deer, among others.

We are striving to conserve the environment and generate employment opportunities for the families living in the area of influence of the 3 de Febrero Hydroelectric Power Plant.
