US$12 million approved for construction of Aeropuerto del Pacífico in La Unión

With 66 votes, the deputies of the Legislative Assembly reformed the Budget Law 2022 and incorporated US$12 million to the Ministry of Public Works for the execution of the first stage of the Aeropuerto del Pacífico to be built in the department of La Unión.

The legislators commented that the project will contribute to the country's tourism, promote the development of the eastern region and generate jobs for the local population.

The project will have a 3.2 kilometer runway, six boarding bridges and will have a total of 1,700 operations, since it will be able to receive any type of aircraft, "there are airlines that are interested in making this their hub.

The objective of the Aeropuerto del Pacífico project is to expand the national airport infrastructure and turn the eastern part of the country into a logistics services center, whose contribution to the country over the next 10 years would be more than $500 million, equivalent to 1.5% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

In the first stage of the airport, more than 4,700 direct jobs will be generated. The projection for 10 years is for more than 50,000 jobs and for 25 years it is expected to generate more than 125,000 jobs.

The Law for the Construction, Administration, Operation and Maintenance of the Aeropuerto Internacional del Pacífico, approved by the current legislature, establishes that the Comisión Ejecutiva Portuaria Autónoma (CEPA), will be the authority in charge of the execution of the project, being able to delegate functions to Public Works to guarantee the implementation of the future air terminal.
