La Salud inaugurates wastewater treatment plant and storage facility

Written by Evelyn Alas

Committed to caring for the environment, Cooperativa Ganadera de Sonsonate de R. L. de C. V., known by salvadorans as La Salud, inaugurated a wastewater treatment plant that will meet the quality standards to discharge water into natural areas.

With an investment of more than $1.2 million, La Salud's wastewater treatment plant will purify organic matter, reducing the pollutant load that will be discharged into the drainage system or a water recipient, returning the water to the environment in good condition and without contamination.

"As the Sonsonate Livestock Cooperative we are committed to the environment, so through the wastewater treatment system of this plant, we seek to improve the quality of the effluent that is discharged into the sewage system to prevent contamination of aquifers, thus contributing to the sanitation of rivers and seas", said Juan José Arce, president of La Salud.

"Water is considered a limited substance and of vital importance for life on the planet, so having a wastewater treatment plant helps to conserve water and care for the environment," reiterated the president of the La Salud cooperative, Juan José Arce.

The wastewater treatment plant consists of the following phases:

1. AUTOMATIC SCREENING

2. HOMOGENIZATION, capacity 1,400 m3/d

3. DAF (FLOATATION UNIT), diameter 4 m

4. BIOLOGICAL OXIDIZATION, n. 2 tanks, capacity 1,100 m3 each one

5. BIOLOGICAL SEDIMENTATION, n. 1 tank, diameter 14,5 m

6. DEHYDRATION OF EXCESS SLUDGE, sludge thickener and filter press.

The wastewater treatment plant is an important tool, considering that only 2.5% of the planet's total water is potable; in other words, wastewater treatment is fundamental for generating a positive impact on both the environment and daily life.

Cooperativa Ganadera de Sonsonate de R. L. de C. V. La Salud also inaugurated its new storage warehouse, which will increase its capacity to store 1 million units of finished product and has a floor space of 1,200 square meters.

This storage warehouse will also be considered a UHT milk warehouse, milk that has been processed at high temperature and sterilized by rapidly heating the milk to a temperature of at least 135 °C, holding it for a few seconds, and then cooling it rapidly to room temperature.

In this way, the Cooperativa Ganadera de Sonsonate de R. L. de C. V. La Salud continues investing and betting on the economic improvement of the country, with the objective of generating expansion and presence in the lives of more people in the national territory.

In short, it seeks to benefit the people of the rural area in the livestock industry of the country, as well as the generation of new jobs nationwide; which currently has 1,500 employees, around 300 suppliers and more than 290 routes for the distribution of products throughout the country.
