Insurers' proposal to "unlock the hidden potential" of the data economy

Written by Evelyn Alas

Insurance Europe has published its response to a consultation by the European Commission on its draft Implementing Regulation. This sets out a list of specific datasets and provisions for their publication and reuse.

According to the industry, this initiative would ensure that a common layer of public sector datasets is "easily and freely" available for reuse, with benefits for society, the environment and the economy.

But in addition to the data described in the annex to the draft regulation, Insurance Europe invites the Commission to also consider making available more data related to sustainable financing, as well as data on road safety and the historical evolution of road safety.

"For insurers, greater availability of data could lead to better monitoring and assessment of risks, which means that insurance products can be better tailored to the risks and needs of individual consumers", the federation says.

The development of new or more sophisticated risk models can enable insurers to offer more competitive rates or to offer insurance for risks that were previously uninsurable, due to information gaps that can now be filled thanks to the greater availability of data".
