Hotel Cerro Verde to open its doors at the end of 2021 after 62 years of abandonment

Written by Evelyn Alas

The Hotel Cerro Verde , located in the department of Santa Ana, was built in 1955 and closed its doors in 1997 due to damage from the 1985 and 2001 earthquakes.

The Ministry of Culture is working on the last phase for the hotel project to be completed and open its doors at the end of this year.

The hotel offers beautiful panoramic views of the Izalco and Santa Ana volcanoes and will have 20 rooms equipped for the comfort of tourists. The facilities will be suitable for social and recreational events.

Guests will be able to enter the mountain hotel through the Parque Nacional Cerro Verde, which is administered by the Instituto Salvadoreño de Turismo (ISTU). The place will offer various activities such as: hiking the trails and climbing the volcanoes.

The site will also have trained personnel to comply with biosafety standards to reduce the risk of Covid-19 infection. The project will promote mountain tourism and encourage domestic tourism.

Different salvadoran companies showed interest in the project, but it was only awarded to the company with the most experience and the best offer.

"62 years have passed for us to once again have this emblematic tourist asset for the country. In the past administrations they were building it in phases, but they did not have the entrepreneurial vision. So what we did was that we closed the phases, we adapted it and started a process through leasing", said the minister of Tourism, Morena Valdez.
