Guo Ping, Huawei's rotating chairman, calls for restructuring the technology paradigm to ensure competitiveness

Written by Evelyn Alas

During MWC Barcelona 2022, Huawei's rotating president, Guo Ping, spoke about the company's plan to continue its globalization strategy and increase its strategic investment in foundational biotechnologies. Through this investment, Huawei hopes to reshape the fundamental theories, architecture and software that underpin its industry, increase its medium- and long-term competitiveness, and ensure the long-term sustainability of the ICT industry.

In his keynote speech, entitled: "Just Look Up, Let&39; Light Up the Future", Guo focused on two major sources of challenges and opportunities in the world: digitalization and carbon neutrality. Existing theories and architectures are unable to support the explosive growth in digital demand.

Forecasts indicate that more than 50% of global GDP will be digitized by 2022. As the global digital economy develops rapidly, the demand for digital products and services has exceeded expectations. Guo explained that as Shannon's theorem and von Neumann's architecture continue to hit serious bottlenecks, the industry must explore new theories and architectures to reshape the technology paradigm and achieve digital sustainability.

Carbon reduction influences the long-term vitality of the digital economy.

On carbon neutrality, Guo said, "Connectivity density and computing power determine the strength of the digital economy, but it must also maintain long-term vitality. Therefore, we need to consider a new dimension, carbon reduction"

Currently, Huawei is adhering to a strategy of "More bits, Fewer watts" in this area.

In addition to enhancing its core digital capabilities, Huawei is committed to making its products 2.7 times more energy efficient through advances in areas such as theory, materials and algorithms. Through such advances, the ICT industry can help other industries reduce their own carbon footprint. In fact, this reduction will be 10 times larger than the carbon footprint of the ICT industry itself.

Huawei is increasing strategic investment in foundational technologies to reshape the technology paradigm.

Guo also said that Huawei is significantly increasing strategic investment in foundational technologies and working with partners to reshape the technology paradigm in three areas: fundamental theories, architecture and software. This investment will gradually be reflected in the competitiveness of the company's products, which they hope will support the long-term and sustainable development of both the company and the ICT industry as a whole.

This investment is also notably focused on helping the company approach the Shannon Limit, and perhaps surpass it by exploring new theories and technologies, such as next-generation MIMO and wireless AI. At the same time, Huawei's research on new theories, such as semantic communications, will provide the industry with guidance on new fundamental theories.

Huawei is also developing exciting new architectures. It is currently integrating photonic and electronic technologies and designing peer-to-peer architectures to solve technological challenges or technical bottlenecks.

On software, Huawei is building AI-centric full-stack software and a new software ecosystem to meet the dramatic demand for computing capacity caused by the explosive growth of AI.

Synergies between software and hardware, the way forward.

Finally, Guo explained that a great user experience comes from synergies between software and hardware. He used two examples to show how Huawei applies this concept to ICT product development and technological innovation for network evolution. First, optimized algorithms for AHR turbochargers are helping MetaAAUs consume less power and improve performance. Second, advances in holographic optics algorithms have enabled OXCs to achieve single-hop connections.

Huawei is the company with the most comprehensive set of ICT capabilities in the digital industry.

Over the past 10 years, the evolution of the network has been a process of introducing the latest IT practices into TC, ranging from IP, to cloud, and then to IA today. As a company with the most comprehensive set of ICT capabilities in the digital industry, Guo said Huawei is confident it can gain an advantage in the evolution to future AI-native networks.

Concluding his speech, Guo said, "Huawei will continue its globalization strategy, in standards, talent, supply chain and more. Huawei is committed to helping customers who choose it achieve the greatest business success".

MWC22 Barcelona takes place from february 28 to march 3 in Barcelona, Spain. Huawei is showcasing its products and solutions at booth 1H50 in Hall 1 of Fira Gran Via. Together with global operators, industry professionals and thought leaders, we will dive into topics such as industry trends, GUIDE to the Future and green development to imagine the future of digital networks.
