Written by Evelyn Alas

On december 15, the Samsung Innovation Campus (SIC) 2021 edition was closed thanks to an alliance with Fundesteam and Terra Foundation, with the participation of 228 young people between the ages of 12-20 from Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama and the Dominican Republic.

The students who benefited from SIC 2021 were selected and received scholarships to participate in this certification, which took place between August 16 and December 15. They received 165 academic hours in a virtual environment that included synchronous, asynchronous and gamification classes.

Through SIC, the young people learned about programming and coding through Scratch, Rur-Ple (Python), C Language, Arduino and Algorithm Problem Solving modules taught by teachers and tutors who are experts in technology, robotics and programming.

With a participation of 50% men and 50% women, they worked on the basis of real cases and problems in which they proposed solutions that contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Eleven best projects

The closing of the program took place with the Samsung Innovation Olympics, in which the 11 best final projects were presented. Each project presented demonstrated everything learned throughout the program and focused on solutions to issues related to the SDGs in the areas of health, environment and inclusion of people with disabilities, among others.

At the end of the program, the young participants receive a certification issued by Samsung and Fundesteam, which is expected to contribute to their educational and professional careers in the face of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, in order to increase the value of their individual profiles in the face of the challenges and opportunities of the labor market.

Extraordinary results

At the end of the program, the young people expressed their satisfaction at having obtained valuable theoretical and practical tools through this training offered by the South Korean technology company in conjunction with Fundasteam and Fundación Terra.   They also highlighted the methodology and the vocation of the teachers.

"I feel very grateful for such an unparalleled and innovative experience that Samsung, Fundesteam and the other partner organizations have allowed us to have. It was wonderful what we learned. Thank you to Professor Giampaolo Maneri for his patience, love and clarity in teaching the classes", said Rut René Charle, one of the participants.

One of her classmates, Stefanny Lucely Cruz, said it was the best experience of her life. "I didn't think I would be able to do great things. Professor Erick Meléndez was a great teacher. I had never felt so comfortable learning something that seemed to be very complex. More teachers with that same enthusiasm as these professors are needed. They all did an excellent job.

For student Miguel Cuevas the balance of the experience can be summed up in the word gain. "I take with me a lot of knowledge and very good memories. From the bottom of my heart, thank you very much”.

Braulio Peralta emphasized that the entire group of young participants, of which he was a member "achieved a lot in such a short time. Thanks again to the team, my classmates and the teachers for their efforts. The results were extraordinary”.
