Why invest in the Modular Data Center Market?

Written by Alondra Gutiérrez

Businesses and consumers have demanded a lot from their digital and data infrastructure over the past year and generally this infrastructure has responded to demand.

The demand for computing power whether it be for work video calls, home schooling software or live streamed series has increased during the Covid-19 pandemic.

This has led Vertiv to invest in the Modular Data Center Market, according to some experts, companies have accelerated their digital transformation plans by three to four years.

This trend is likely to continue for the next five years as companies invest more in technologies such as cloud computing, 5G mobile networks, artificial intelligence, edge computing and Internet-connected devices, or the Internet of Things (IoT).

Will the physical infrastructure be able to meet the growing demand for computing power and fast, reliable data? Data centers have grown over the last decade, but they take a long time to build. It can be difficult to get the land available in the right location.

Prefabricated modular data centers are an alternative, as well as an increasingly popular type of digital infrastructure. They are manufactured and tested in a factory and shipped to the customer's site, rather than being built at the customer's site. The modular construction method is being used in both skyscrapers and data centers.

Demand for prefabricated data centers that are typically smaller than traditional data centers is increasing around the world. In 2019, the market for modular data centers grew by 65%, according to a research paper published by Omdia, a technology research and consulting company.

As modular data centers come to the forefront, they are being used by companies of all sizes. By 2022, the global prefabricated data center market will reach a value of US$4.2 billion, up from the US$2600 reached in 2017, according to 451 Research, a technology research company.

Vertiv, one of the leading providers in the modular data center market, is expanding its capacity for prefabricated data centers and is developing new technologies to support customer growth.

We have opened a new US$10 million data center factory in Croatia to support the growing demand for modular data centers. The investments will double the production capacity for prefabricated modular data centers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA). At an event held last week at our new factory (Modular Data Center Innovation Forum), we discussed the current data center market, its future and the burgeoning data center market in general.

As the world's computing needs continue to grow, Vertiv is committed to providing the best possible physical infrastructure to support digital services. Prefabricated modular data centers will be an increasingly important part of this infrastructure.
