OPC receives first place in the "Maritime Award of the Americas 2017" awarded by the OEA

Operadora Portuaria Centroamericana (OPC) was awarded the first place of the "Maritime Award of the Americas 2017", given by the Organization of American States (OEA), through its Secretariat of the Inter-American Committee on Ports (CIP).

The recognition was delivered during the event "II Hemispheric Seminar on Corporate Social Responsibility and Gender Equity: Creating a Competitive and Inclusive Port Sector", held from May 23 to 25 in Lima, Peru.

This award was received by the manager of Social Responsibility of the Central American Port Operator, Meyvi Castañeda.

It recognizes successful practices of public or private ports, terminals, companies dedicated to maritime port activities that demonstrate sustainability, efficiency and innovation,

"The OAS selected OPC as the winner of the Award in the Environmentally Sustainable Waste Management category, for the excellent work we are doing in Puerto Cortés. On this occasion the company presented the practice on waste management, and environmental conservation, which arises from the environmental programs of the Integrated Management System applied in the terminal, and which is divided into several components:

the first the awareness, in which induction is given to new staff through periodic talk,s and outreach campaigns; the second is that of operational controls, in which reduction, reuse and recycling practices are carried out; the third is rainwater harvesting; the fourth the water purification system and finally the solar panels”, Castañeda  explained.

In addition to receiving the award on behalf of OPC, the Social Responsibility Manager participated during the event, with a presentation on these good practices, and others that are held in Puerto Cortés.

"The company has placed a special focus on reducing the risks that affect the environment, this is one of the main pillars of the Corporate Social Responsibility actions, as well as education, and health, among others. We are executing programs of reduction and control of the consumption of natural resources, of selective collection, and recycling of materials”, the executive said.

Castañeda thanked the Secretariat of the Inter-American Committee on Ports of the OEA for having awarded the award to the company, highlighting its commitment to protecting the environment and recognizing its contribution to the economic development of Honduras through Puerto Cortés, which each day becomes more competitive.

"The success of our company is connected to social progress, which is why we focus on generating economic value in our operations and at the same time we promote development, and innovation throughout the production chain, thus generating benefits for customers, suppliers and the community where we opérate”, the CSR manager said.
