El Salvador guarantees energy for salvadorans in the face of "El Niño" Phenomenon

Written by Evelyn Alas

The Dirección General de Energía, Hidrocarburos y Minas (DGEHM) informs that El Salvador is guaranteeing the energy supply for Salvadorans, due to the "El Niño" phenomenon that keeps countries in the Central American region in crisis.

Currently, several countries in the region are seeking energy surpluses in the Regional Electricity Market (MER) to meet their demands, some have even been forced to proceed with power outages, affecting their population, due to the scarcity of energy generation in the region.

"The Central Government is not going to allow salvadorans to be left without electric energy and even less in a rationed manner, as is happening in other countries in the region. The institutions that have to do with this important sector, are working so that the economy does not stop and households continue to have this vital resource", mentioned the General Director of Energy, Hydrocarbons and Mines, Daniel Álvarez.

El Salvador is the only country in the region that keeps the price of energy stable and is exporting at Central American level, always guaranteeing the resource for Salvadorans. The rest of the countries, to date, are importing this resource, even when it is sold at high prices.

From the DGEHM, a series of measures are being implemented to guarantee the supply and price stabilization of this resource for the population at national level, activating the Contratos de Naturaleza Pública (CNP) and promoting transitory decrees to reasonably adjust the export of this resource to the region and avoid negative impacts on the population.
