IDB announces new Executive Vice President and two Vice Presidencies

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) announced two of its Vice Presidents and the Executive Vice President. Jordan Schwartz will serve as Executive Vice President, Ana María Ibáñez as Vice President for Sectors and Knowledge, and Anabel González as Vice President for Countries. The candidates were confirmed by the IDB Board of Executive Directors.

As Executive Vice President (EVP), Jordan Schwartz, a U.S. citizen, is the IDB's Chief Operating Officer (COO) and will oversee quality control and risk management of all Bank operations. The VPE chairs the management committees responsible for the Bank's operational activities and supervises and directs the Vice Presidents and other senior staff. He will take office on june 1, 2023.

Jordan Schwartz served as the World Bank's country director for Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay from 2019 to january 2023. Previously, Schwartz held various leadership positions related to infrastructure finance, public-private partnerships (PPPs) and urban development. He was also Chief Economist in the World Bank's Sustainable Development Department for Latin America and the Caribbean.  Prior to joining the World Bank in 1998, Schwartz worked in transportation strategy management consulting at Booz Allen & Hamilton and utilities and infrastructure at Deloitte & Touche. He holds a master's degree in Foreign Service from Georgetown University and a bachelor's degree in International Relations from Tufts University.

As Vice President of Sectors and Knowledge (VPS), Ana María Ibáñez will be responsible for generating the Bank's knowledge on development challenges across sectors to support member countries in the design and implementation of their regional integration and trade programs, projects and initiatives, among other functions. Ibáñez starts as VPS on june 1, 2023.

Ana María Ibáñez, a Colombian citizen, has had a long career dedicated to research for development. She is Senior Economics Advisor at the Vice-Presidency of Sectors and Knowledge. Previously, she was Dean of the School of Economics at the Universidad de los Andes. She has also been a visiting professor at Yale University and Princeton University, and a visiting researcher at the Institute of Development Studies. Her research focuses on microeconomic analysis of internal conflict, migration and rural development. She holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in agriculture and resource economics from the University of Maryland at College Park, and a B.A. in economics from the Universidad de los Andes in Bogota, Colombia.

As Vice President for Countries (VPP), Anabel González will be responsible for leading the relationship with its borrowing member countries for the IDB Group, including formulating country and regional strategies, overseeing the Bank's public sector operations and helping to develop the non-sovereign guarantee program. She will assume the position on september 1, 2023.

Anabel González, a dual national of Costa Rica and the United States, is Deputy Director General of the World Trade Organization. She is a recognized world expert on trade, investment and economic development. Previously, she served as Minister of Foreign Trade of Costa Rica and Senior Director of the World Bank's Trade and Competitiveness Global Practice. She was a non-resident senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. She holds a law degree from the Universidad de Costa Rica and an LL.M. from Georgetown University.

IDB President Ilan Goldfajn thanked Executive Vice President Reina Irene Mejia, Vice President for Countries Richard Martinez and Vice President for Sectors and Knowledge Benigno Lopez for their service and asked for their support during the transition of both Vice Presidents and the Executive Vice President.
