Davivienda Seguros ratifies its commitment to the conservation of mangroves

Written by Evelyn Alas

As part of the sustainability strategy of Davivienda in El Salvador, its subsidiary Davivienda Seguros reaffirms again its commitment to biodiversity, through mangrove conservation in the country; therefore it is committed to continue carrying out restoration activities in the Barra de Santiago complex, located in the department of Ahuachapán, which is a wetland of international importance, according to the Ramsar Convention.

"At Davivienda Seguros we reaffirm our commitment to continue working in order to be agents of change to restore our planet through actions aimed at safeguarding our ecosystems. This year we will continue working on the restoration of the Barra de Santiago complex, which presents us with challenges, but also opens great opportunities to work together with Salvadorans for the benefit of our future", said Sabina Ayala, sustainability coordinator of Davivienda El Salvador.

This is the fifth consecutive year of execution of the environmental program, which is attached to Seguro de Vida Verde, in conjunction with FUNDEMAS, within the framework of its Limpiemos El Salvador program; and for the third consecutive year with the participation of the German Development Cooperation Agency - GIZ, through the Biodiversity and Business program, and on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), contributing with technical advice to establish a baseline on the state of mangrove biodiversity and develop a management and monitoring plan that provides tools and information to support, among other aspects, decision making, and especially demonstrate the positive impacts of the actions taken for its conservation.

To date, Davivienda Seguros has intervened with the restoration process of 6.2 hectares (ha) of mangrove forest, setting a precedent at the national level for companies in El Salvador and their role in the protection of salt forests.

In addition to the intervention in these areas, Davivienda Seguros has supported the planting of more than 17 thousand mangrove trees, equivalent to 1,232.8 tons of CO2, which has directly impacted 385 families.

"We appreciate the trust and loyalty of our customers, who by choosing Seguro de Vida Verde help us to protect the mangrove ecosystem. For each policy where you protect your life or that of your family, Davivienda Seguros contributes to the consolidation of results for the benefit of our fauna and flora, as well as the improvement of air quality, influencing the fulfillment of sustainable development goals", said Francisco Portillo Mena, manager of Bancaseguros de Davivienda Seguros, S.A.

Through the shared value strategy with GIZ and Fundemas, the entities will continue adding impacts in this cause during this year, through a program that will allow environmental, economic and social benefits.

The environmental impact is reflected in the intervention and recovery of more hectares of mangrove forest; vegetation cover will be increased, allowing for greater carbon fixation in the substrate and in the plant structure.

Economic benefits: Temporary jobs will be provided to people who support the development of the project by cleaning the site and planting mangrove trees.

Regarding the social impact: The ecological restoration of mangroves is fundamental because it can be seen as a solution based on Nature, which allows facing social challenges such as climate change adaptation and recovering services for human welfare and biodiversity conservation.

"At FUNDEMAS we believe in the best version of El Salvador, our purpose that motivates us to carry out different actions that allow us to impact the sustainable development of El Salvador. We are pleased to join forces with our partners, DAVIVIENDA, with whom we work for the restoration of the mangroves in Barra de Santiago. This project is a reflection of the importance of sustainability strategies carried out by our partners, and also reflects the impact capacity we have when we articulate efforts under the same objective: to work for the sustainable development of El Salvador", said Maythe Cornejo, Environmental manager of FUNDEMAS.
