Protect your information from cybercriminals during the August vacations

Written by Evelyn Alas

During the vacations, salvadorans take advantage of the time to carry out different economic activities, such as domestic tourism and shopping for different items.

This period could also be used by cyber criminals who are dedicated to steal people's information, in order to carry out fraud to their bank accounts, taking advantage of the fact that many times users are distracted in their online purchases or with the control of their card movements.

"It is very important that people know that they have to adopt new habits to make transactions, monitor their financial life and protect their electronic devices that they should not share personal information with anyone who calls them and tells them that they belong to any bank. We must be alert to any fraud attempt'', said Alonso Ramírez Regional Cyber Security Manager GBM Corporation.

In order not to fall into the trap of those who are unscrupulously engaged in this cybercrime activity, you can take into account the following recommendations:

  • If you receive a call from an unknown number and it asks you for your personal data, do not share it.
  • Do not provide your debit or credit card details, account numbers or passwords.
  • Create a password with 8 characters or more; containing a combination of letters, numbers and symbols.
  • Keep in mind that a secure password should be easy for you to remember, but difficult for someone else to guess.
  • Do not open links or emails from unknown people, as they could be viruses when opened, this can allow criminals to have remote access to your device and financial information.
  • Do not use basic information such as your birthday in your password, but letters, numbers and symbols, and make them at least 10 characters long.
  • Internet shopping in times of pandemic continues to increase, increasing the risk that hackers will continue to try to steal your credit or debit card information to make purchases using your data, without you even realizing it.

It is important to be careful with hackers, because they use very simple techniques to make you fall into fraud; for example, create fake websites and scam the buyer by offering various items, in order to steal your credit or debit card information, or not to deliver the product you supposedly bought.

"You should take care of your information, and not share it with any stranger, neither by email, text message, calls or chat. In case of any suspicion or fraud attempt, you should go directly to your bank's offices and inform them of what happened", commented Alonso Ramírez, Regional Cyber Security manager GBM Corporation.

Also remember to have, as far as possible, a recognized antivirus software to protect your devices and maintain security when surfing the Internet. It is important to keep in mind all the above recommendations when entering your credit or debit card information on a website, these will help you to be alert when shopping safely, and you will not be a victim of fraud or cyber scams in this new normality.
