The minister of Finance, Alejandro Zelaya, mentioned, during a television interview in which the subject of the reform to the Law for the Creation of the Ley de Creación del Fideicomiso para la Recuperación Económica de las Empresas Salvadoreñas (FIREMPRESA), submitted yesterday to the Legislative Assembly, was discussed.

"Yesterday we went to the Assembly to comply with the promise of the President of the Republic to increase the minimum wage, this is one of the best designs in Latin America", explained the minister of Finance.

He indicated that the Government will provide support to micro and small enterprises (MYPES) from 1 to 100 employees so that they can subsidize the 20% increase in the minimum wage for one year.

In addition, he said that the delivery of the subsidy for the 20% increase in the minimum wage will be granted through a database where entrepreneurs are registered as employers in the Institución Salvadoreño del Seguro Social (ISSS).

"To date, FIREMPRESA has granted more than US$380 million in credits and subsidies to micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs); within which the sectors of transporters, artists, fishermen, informal workers in the Santa Ana market and formal and informal entrepreneurs stand out", he said.

The reform includes US$100 million for MSMEs with between 1 and 100 employees. This measure is part of the integral plan that seeks to give a better quality of life to families with a 20% increase in the minimum wage, which is up to US$60.83 for the commerce sector, said the minister.

The minister said that, with the implementation of the increase in the minimum wage, this includes the delivery of 2.1 million food packages to families, so that these supplies are received at home and to provide for lower prices due to a lower demand for food in the local market; as well as the verification of the products of the basic food basket by the Defensoría del Consumidor (DC) to avoid speculation and hoarding.
