700 inspectors will enforce labor rights of 37 thousand private security employees

Written by Evelyn Alas

The Minister of Labor, Rolando Castro, began the massive deployment of inspection to private security and cleaning companies to guarantee, verify and enforce labor rights.

In addition, the deployment has about 700 collaborators for the 14 departments in which they will carry out simultaneous inspections and monitoring management in case of any non-compliance. Castro said that there are over 37 thousand workers in formal terms and there are others in informality in security companies, being a quite large under-registration.

There are close to 47 thousand workers to whom they will bring justice. He explained that they will carry out comprehensive inspections, not only to verify the violation of labor laws, but also of occupational health and safety standards. He emphasized that private security and cleaning companies are the most denounced because they violate workers' rights.

He added that the companies make discounts to the employees for equipment, weapons, uniforms and work tools, which corresponds to the company's expenses, not to the workers.

The official explained that the Constitution establishes the 8 working hours and also the Labor Code. The employees of the security companies have 48 and 72 hour shifts and, if the relief is not present, those hours can be duplicated (to the one on duty). He said that many companies make discounts for uniforms, footwear, weapons, equipment and work tools and do not pay the minimum wage.

He emphasized that security companies lacerate human dignity by making employees work beyond what is regulated by the Law.

He explained that Article 38, sixth ordinal, of the Constitution of the Republic will be applied during these inspections. In the next few days they will provide details of the results of this arduous work in defense of labor rights.
