Vendors say there is a price increase in school supplies by 2022

Written by Evelyn Alas

Vendors in downtown San Salvador have had to increase the prices of school supplies to achieve minimal profits, risking offering notebooks at US$0.80 and US$0.90 where they earn US$0.02 and US$0.03 in order not to lose their clients.

One of the traders says that she used to buy 100 notebooks for US$34 and now they cost US$36 or more. In addition, the vendors say that there are salvadorans who come to their stalls with a list of supplies and they make them a combo that can benefit both the merchant and the customer.

The price of a box of colors costs US$3.00, an eraser US$0.50, a pencil sharpener US$1.00, a compass US$1.50, a pencil case US$1.50, adding biosecurity items, hand soap costs US$1.25, alcohol gel US$1.50, and a box of masks US$2.50.

In addition, the Covid-19 pandemic has caused a rise in import costs at the international level, which has been detrimental to the sector.

Salvadorans who are going to buy supplies should make a previous budget so that this increase does not affect their pockets.
