Commandments to celebrate the New Year in peace and without burns

Written by Evelyn Alas

The Fondo Solidario Para la Salud (FOSALUD), recommends that if you are one of those who think that celebrating New Year's Eve without gunpowder is not a celebration, you should change the 'chip' of that thought: December after december, the numbers reaffirm that it is not a good idea to handle these explosives and much less allow your children to do so.

1. The first thing experts recommend is "not to buy any type of gunpowder at home, even the simplest ones, such as sparklers, whistlers or fulminants", so now you know: do not buy gunpowder.

2. You will understand that pyrotechnic gunpowder should be handled only by specialized, experienced, qualified and trained technical personnel, with enough skill to be able not only to handle the gunpowder, but also to manage the risks and contingencies associated with its use.

3. Be extremely careful with your children, especially with children under 5 years old: they are the most vulnerable to the terrible consequences of gunpowder because they do not measure the danger and end up with amputated fingers, broken hands or serious burns.

4. You will recall that gunpowder injuries range from burns to amputations in users and manufacturers. "These are among the most devastating injuries and a major public health problem, 90% of them are preventable, so it is necessary to adopt new ways of celebration, refraining from using pyrotechnic elements and thus protect the health and integrity of children, youth and adults in the country during the Christmas and New Year holidays”.

5. Know that the purchase, sale and clandestine use of gunpowder are a crime, and should be reported through the Defensoría del Consumidor or to the Police of your municipality.

6. Keep in mind that the penalties for parents who allow their children to use gunpowder can reach up to the loss of parental rights of minors according to the law to ensure the life, physical integrity and recreation of the child exposed to the risk of handling pyrotechnic or explosive articles.

7. Remember that gunpowder explosions are terrible for pets and alter them so much that they can cause panic attacks, aggression, escape attempts and even cause older animals to develop heart problems and hypertension.
