Young women leading a startup in Latin America are 19 to 25 years old

Written by Evelyn Alas

The path of women entrepreneurs in Latin America is not an easy one, but in 2022 we are beginning to see results of the efforts of different organizations, funds and women entrepreneurs who have supported startups led by women. Data that demonstrates this can be found in the Report on women leaders of startups in Latin America: in what sectors they undertake and under what circumstances, prepared by Platzi, the largest Spanish-speaking professional education platform.

The trends related to entrepreneurship in Latin America give us new perspectives on how women create companies, at what age, with whom they do it, how much they are involved in the process of raising capital and what positions they hold in the companies, among others.

The survey, prepared by Platzi through the Platzi Startups Demoday 2022 Program, details that women who lead the startup from seed stage to pre-series A of the Platzi community, do so at a young age and are mainly found in two groups: from 19 to 25 years old, with 33% of the respondents, and between 31 and 35, with 28% of them.

When it comes to starting a business, women mainly rely on their husbands or boyfriends, with 24% of them having them as co-founders. While 20% do it with a close friend, just over 10% with another woman and only 8% decide to do it alone.

The three most representative sectors in which women are entrepreneurs are fintech and insurtech, e-commerce and retail, and business services. With their companies, they have created more than 800 direct jobs in 2022 and, regarding the size of the companies, it stands out that 41% have between 5 to 10 employees, and 37% have between 11 and 50 employees.

The most common jobs held by female leaders are Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the most represented position with 60 percent, followed by Chief Operating Officer, with 17 percent. Another relevant statistic, and correlated with the percentage taking on CEO duties, is that about 65 percent of women are in charge of the fundraising process.

"At Platzi, we seek to reduce the gender gap related to entrepreneurship and technology. We have driven scholarship programs with the support of different partnerships with other companies", said Juliane Butty, Head Platzi Partnerships, Startups at Platzi.

It is worth mentioning that although a third of the startups in the survey have not yet raised money, they have been very good at growing with very little resources, considering that only four startups are at a pre-seed stage with no revenue. Half of the startups have raised between $50,000 and just over $1 million.

Also, the report details that, according to the Asociación Latinoamericana de Capital de Riesgo y Capital Privado, nearly one-third of venture capital dollars went to women-led startups in the first half of 2022, a new record.

All of this data and more was compiled in a report available here, focusing on women founders and executives of promising early-stage startups from Platzi's community, the largest in tech with more than 4 million students.

"This showcase highlights trends in the female-led entrepreneurial ecosystem to understand who they are, how they are preparing to grow their companies, and to promote and showcase some of the brilliant female founders in the community", said Íngrid Zúñiga, director of Communications at Platzi.
