Defensoría verifies leading importer of fertilizers and herbicides

Written by Evelyn Alas

The president of the Defensoría del Consumidor, Ricardo Salazar, led an operation in a leading company in the field of fertilizers, fertilizers and herbicides as part of the 11 measures against inflation implemented by the Government of President Bukele.

"As part of this effort, we are at Duwest El Salvador, which is an important importer of agricultural inputs, where a verification of stocks is being carried out", said the official.

These inspections are a mandate given by President Bukele, when he announced the 11 economic measures for the benefit of the population. One of the measures, the tenth, consists of suspending import tariffs on 20 basic consumer products for salvadoran families, for one year.

"These products come from South America and Israel, which have already benefited from the exemption of taxes, situation in which, the Defensoría del Consumidor once warned by the Dirección General de Aduanas, we activate the corresponding verification to ensure that these products are transferred, with these decreases, to consumers", said Salazar.

Despite the fact that inflation is due to global crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the container crisis and the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the Government of President Bukele has arranged effective measures to avoid negative economic consequences for salvadorans.

"We know that these products reach the agroservices, and these must pass on the benefits to consumers. We have carried out more than 7,200 verifications in the food sector, both importers and manufacturers and final points of sale", said the head of the Defensoría del Consumidor .

As a result of these inspections, more than 30 processes have been opened in the inspectorate to corroborate that there is no price increase.
