Assembly approves construction of Pacific Airport in La Unión

Written by Evelyn Alas

With 67 votes, the deputies of the Legislative Assembly approved the Law for the Construction, Administration, Operation and Maintenance of the International Airport of the Pacific.

This project, to be built in the department of La Unión, will be in charge of the Comisión Ejecutiva Portuaria Autónoma (CEPA), and is part of a set of works that the Central Government will execute in the area, together with Bitcoin City.

Among the benefits of its construction are the generation of quality employment sources for the population of the area, the economic and tourist development of the eastern part of the country.

Congressman Rodrigo Ayala said that in the first year of operation of this air terminal, 4,700 direct sources of employment will be generated, not counting the dynamization that will be generated in the tourism sector due to the flow of visitors to the area.

Likewise, the mobilization of 80 thousand passengers is estimated, with 1,700 possible aeronautical operations (air traffic); in its tenth year, one million passengers with 17,900 aeronautical operations; and in its 25th year, three million passengers (similar to the amount that moves in the Comalapa airport), with 44,400 aeronautical operations.

In 2019, CEPA was commissioned to conduct the feasibility study for the construction of the airport, with the support of the Fondo Salvadoreño para Estudios de Preinversión (FOSEP) of the Ministry of Finance.

This study includes five main products, including the presentation of the work plan for the development and execution of the feasibility study, development of the market study, airport infrastructure and legal aspects (including environmental and social impact and land registry study), economic and financial study, and final report on the feasibility study.
