The protection of the development and sustainable maintenance of marine shrimp are two of the main purposes of the national ban, which will be issued by the Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería (MAG), through the Centro de Desarrollo de la Pesca y la Acuicultura (CENDEPESCA), from may 2nd to may 31st.

According to CENDEPESCA, the closure responds to the need to: "To protect the period of greatest reproduction and growth of marine shrimp and the ecosystems where they inhabit, in order to ensure their recovery and sustainability, putting into practice the temporary suspension of their extraction, as a measure of management of hydrobiological resources"

The selected season, in addition to considering biological aspects, has the prior consent of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, the Consejo Nacional de la Pesca y la Acuicultura, la Autoridad Marítima Portuaria (AMP), Policía Nacional Civil (PNC), the Fuerza Naval,, among other institutions.

The MAG, through CENDEPESCA, as the entity responsible for overseeing fisheries production, one of the economic pillars of El Salvador, with the generation of more than 35,000 direct jobs, which are distributed between industrial and artisanal fisheries, shrimp aquaculture, maquiladoras, domestic traders and exporters.

Therefore, by refraining from the illegal extraction and commercialization of marine shrimp for a period of time, the availability of the resource is guaranteed and, therefore, the livelihood of thousands of salvadorans.

In addition, as part of the articulated governmental work, the AMP, the PNC and the Naval Force will support the enforcement of the ban, otherwise those responsible will be sanctioned.
