US$6 million to be invested in expansion of container yard at the Port of Acajutla

According to the Comisión Ejecutiva Portuaria Autónoma (CEPA), on september 8, 2022, the expansion of 21,456 square meters of the container yard of the maritime terminal, through which most of the raw materials and finished products enter and leave the country, began. To date, this project is 71% complete.

The institution will invest approximately US$6 million in the expansion of the container yard at the Port of Acajutla, in the department of Sonsonate.

The work consists of storage areas, exclusive circulation lanes for cargo handling equipment, internal and external lanes for heavy transport, 7 lighting towers, an electrical substation, and a control panel room.

The project, which is part of the Plan Cuscatlán, executed by the Central Government, is part of an investment package that exceeds US$300 million.

It also includes a special area for refrigerated containers and the acquisition of cargo equipment for the operation, as well as 3+1 and 2+1 Straddle Carrier cranes.

Upon completion of the expansion, the Port of Acajutla will have an area of approximately 91,000 square meters, and will be able to handle more than 235,000 containers per year, representing a 36.3% increase in storage capacity.

The President of CEPA, Federico Anliker, explained that this amount of investment will expand the most important maritime terminal in El Salvador, in several stages, in order to quadruple its installed capacity and make it the best logistics platform in the Central American region.
