Uber promotes the empowerment of female driver members in El Salvador, with "Juntas al volante"

Written by Alondra Gutiérrez

Uber's app aims to offer opportunities through technology. To fulfill its commitment to gender equity, the mobility platform today presented the empowerment program "Juntas al volante" for female driver members who use or plan to use the Uber app in El Salvador.

"Juntas al volante" responds to a challenge to change a reality that Uber has detected in countries in the region. Of the drivers registered in the app, 4.7% in El Salvador identify themselves as women. Another fact highlights that, of the Salvadoran women who registered in the app, 51% never made their first trip.

In Latin America, the empowerment program is available in 11 countries, where 1 in 5 women who use the button use it 90% of the time. In addition, in the region we have registered more than 8 million trips with the "Ellas" button active and more than half of the collaborating members who used it, remained active by taking trips through the app for more hours and during the night.

Together with Voces Vitales, we have worked to understand the reality of women and the barriers that prevent them from accessing the opportunities that the app offers them. We also listened to the opinion of the driver members who already use the platform, to improve their experience with the app.

Among the initiatives of the "Juntas al Volante" program, female driver-members can access a new button called "Ellas". This option allows driver-members who identify as female or non-binary to choose whether they want to receive ride requests only from female users.

This feature will be found in the preferences menu within the app, so female driver-members will be able to turn it on or off at any time. This option promotes the empowerment of women in El Salvador.
