Walmart supermarkets position themselves in the minds of Central American consumers

Walmart Central America's four supermarket formats are positioned in the minds of Central American customers. This is evidenced by the Top of Mind 2022 study conducted by market research and brand consulting firm Kantar Mercaplan.

Walmart's four supermarket formats are among the top 5 supermarket brands most positioned in the minds of customers in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. In other words, 100% of Walmart Central America's supermarkets are among the top 5 most recognized retail brands by Central Americans.

The formats of the retail chain are Supercenter (Walmart), super (Paiz, La Despensa de Don Juan, La Unión and Masxmenos), bodegas (Maxi Despensa and Maxi Palí) and Descuentos (Despensa Familiar and Palí).

The Palí brand is the best performer, being the best positioned supermarket in Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

In Costa Rica, brand recognition is strongly in favor of the company's supermarkets. Palí, Walmart, Maxi Palí and Masxmenos are the four brands most recognized by Costa Ricans.

In Nicaragua, Palí and Maxi Palí are the two most positioned brands in the minds of Nicaraguan consumers.

They are the ones who give life to the supermarkets every day and who really deserve recognition for their efforts and daily work", said Aquileo Sánchez, Walmart's Director of Corporate Affairs in Central America.

In Guatemala, 6 out of 10 Guatemalans think of one of Walmart Central America's brands when they are asked about a supermarket; while 3 out of 4 Costa Ricans and Nicaraguans respond by mentioning one of the supermarkets.

For the Top of Mind study, Kantar Mercaplan conducted 2,143 interviews in 7 countries. The results were divided into 5 groups: retail/service sector, technology/home, food, beverages and mobility. These groups are made up of 25 categories. Walmart brands appear and are protagonists in the supermarket and department store categories.

Walmart making  its way in department stores

In the study, Walmart supermarkets also gain notoriety in the department store category. In the top 5 of the five countries, at least one of the retail conglomerate's supermarkets appears.

The Walmart brand ranks second in department stores in Guatemala and El Salvador. In addition, in Guatemala, Despensa Familiar and Maxi Despensa are among the most recognized brands in the category.

Walmart also stands out among the most positioned brands in department stores in Costa Rica and Honduras, while in Nicaragua, Palí and Maxi Palí are in second and third place in terms of recognition.

Walmart brands are the only supermarkets that appear in the top 5 of recognition in the department store category in Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica and Nicaragua. In the case of El Salvador, Walmart is the best positioned supermarket brand in the category.
