Uber and Voces Vitales launch "Trips with Respect" to combat gender-based violence

Written by Evelyn Alas

Aware that violence against women is a complex and systemic problem that affects the whole society, from Uber in alliance with Efecto Boomerang and Voces Vitales, expert organizations on issues of equity and gender violence, a program with informative content was created for all those driver partners registered in the Uber app in El Salvador, who voluntarily want to learn about the issue and get a badge in the application.

Between march and june 2020, according to the Instituto Salvadoreño para el Desarrollo de la Mujer (ISDEMU), more than 700 cases of women in El Salvador reported suffering some type of psychological, physical or sexual violence.

"Given the rates of violence against women in our country, we celebrate that the Uber app is taking clear actions to help combat this problem. That is why we support this initiative and hope that it translates into a safer environment for salvadoran women", said Claudia Cruz, Executive Director of Voces Vitales El Salvador.

The informative content seeks to address the issue in a different way, therefore, through a practical way and simple language, 5 podcasts were created with different topics such as: keys to provide better service; effective and respectful communication; and what is sexual harassment, how to recognize and avoid it.

The content is on a platform that allows the Driver Partner to listen to the audios, read information about it and, at the end, take a question session certified and designed by Boomerang Effect, which if passed satisfactorily, awards a badge in the form of a medal in the Uber application.

"Addressing such a serious topic in an attention-grabbing and truly effective way is no easy task. That is why, in Boomerang Effect part of the proposed strategy was to have the participation of highly recognized characters, for the deconstruction and construction of new paradigms and ways of thinking", said Fernando Araya, from Boomerang Effect.

"In Uber we want to address the problem of violence against women that is experienced today, in the best possible way. That is why in El Salvador we have partnered with Efecto Boomerang and Voces Vitales, to generate a social impact, which has a resonance in multiple areas of society", said Manuela Bedoya, Uber's safety communications manager for the andean region, Central America and the Caribbean.
