El Salvador obtains denomination of origin for five premium coffee brands

Written by Evelyn Alas

As part of the commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the signing and entry into force of the Association Agreement between the European Union (EU) and Central America, El Salvador obtained the denomination of origin for the premium coffee brands Cacahuatique, Tecapa Chinameca, Chichontepec, Alotepec Metapán and Bálsamo Quezaltepec.

Such geographical indications of origin position El Salvador as the country in the Central American region where the best coffees in the world are produced, which is a source of pride for the salvadoran producers that grow coffee in these regions of the country.

According to the executive director of the Consejo Salvadoreño del Café (CSC), Carolina Padilla, expressed that this achievement has been possible thanks to the efforts of local producers and the European Union in Central America.

In addition, she assured that they congratulate all the producers who are members of the denominations of origin, who work daily to strengthen the quality of their coffees.

The European Union highlighted that this is the first time that geographical indications have been added to the EU-Central America Association Agreement since the initial decision to protect geographical indications under the agreement.

The designation of origin is a concept that indicates the origin of a food product, outlines its qualities and quality, and is also a way of protecting the industrial or agro-industrial property of the product against imitations or counterfeits. It is also associated with a specific place in a territory, the characteristics associated with that place, context, properties and other specifications.
