Becomes the first app to deliver food in space

Written by Evelyn Alas

Uber Eats makes history by becoming the first food ordering app to make a delivery beyond the Earth's surface and into the thermosphere. The app announced this milestone today by completing its first food delivery to the International Space Station.

Uber Eats partnered with Japanese entrepreneur and delivery fan Yusaku Maezawa, who personally delivered typical Japanese food to astronauts on the International Space Station as part of their 12-day orbit.

The delivery arrived on december 11, 2021 at 8:40 a.m. El Salvador time. The order traveled nearly 400 kilometers and the trip took a total of 8 hours and 34 minutes from Maezawa's departure from Earth.

"It's a small delivery for Yusaku Maezawa; a giant delivery for Uber Eats!" said Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi. "We are beyond excited to have helped make our first successful delivery to space. Our goal is to help people go where they want and get what they want, no matter where they are. That's why we're proud to be able to bring a little piece of Earth to the astronauts on the International Space Station.

Yusaku Maezawa was definitely rated five stars on this delivery, even though it took a little longer than the usual 30 minutes".

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to make the first Uber Eats delivery to space", Yusaku Maezawa added. "Without a doubt, this Uber Eats effort and sense of adventure has been inspiring. I will never stop challenging myself, and I hope everyone will continue to do the same. Let's make this world a better place".

The order included miso boiled horse mackerel, beef in sweet sauce, simmered chicken with bamboo shoots and braised pork.

The International Space Station is a modular space station located in low Earth orbit. The shuttle launched on december 8, 2021 and will return to Earth on december 20, 2021.
