AES El Salvador wins International Innovation Award

Written by Evelyn Alas

The recognition evidences AES's commitment to promote innovation in the electricity sector, in favor of the economic and social development of the communities.

AES El Salvador's project "Self-supply with Renewable Energy in the Islands of the Gulf of Fonseca" won first place in the Decentralization category of the Innovation Contest 2021, organized by the Regional Energy Integration Commission (CIER) based in Montevideo, Uruguay.

With this award, CIER recognizes companies and corporations that transform the regional electricity sector, while offering flexible, relevant, cost-effective and environmentally responsible energy solutions.

The winning project consists of the construction of a new solar plant combined with batteries on Meanguera Island, department of La Unión.

John Davenport, AES El Salvador's Director of Distributed Generation, said: "The impact of the solar plant, combined with energy storage, will enable the inclusive development of these communities and improve the lives of all families on the islands through a safe, continuous and reliable energy service.

The Meanguera Island energy project was also recognized with the Gold Award in the Decentralization category in the regional stage of the "CECACIER Innovation 2021 Award", organized by the Regional Electricity Integration Commission of Central America and the Caribbean (CECACIER), which allowed it to advance to the final phase of the competition representing that institution at the Latin American level.

AES, a world leader in solar and energy storage systems

In 2019, AES Corporation built the world's largest integrated solar energy and storage system, providing reliable, carbon-free power to the island of Kauai in Hawaii, United States.

In line with AES Corporation, the new solar plant in the Gulf of Fonseca will drive the country's energy future, becoming a regional benchmark for distributed energy generation.
